HOW IT WORKS

A 21Captains Air Refiner is a reusable, activated charcoal bag that naturally absorbs excess moisture and neutralises odours in any enclosed space. No power, no plug, no chemicals, no sprays. You place it where you need it and it quietly goes to work around the clock.

The activated charcoal inside is sourced from coconut shells and contains millions of microscopic pores that draw moisture and odour-causing particles out of the air as it circulates around the bag. Once a month, an hour in direct sunlight purges what the charcoal has been holding and it is ready to go again.

Every Air Refiner is handmade in our warehouse in West Ipswich, Queensland. The outer fabric is made from recycled plastic bottles, so nothing goes to waste.

Activated charcoal works through a process called adsorption, not absorption. The surface of each charcoal granule is covered in millions of microscopic pores that create an enormous internal surface area. As air moves around the bag, moisture molecules and odour-causing particles are drawn into those pores and held there.

It is completely passive. No fan, no filter, no electricity. The natural circulation of air in any enclosed space does all the work. The charcoal just holds what it captures until you sun bake it to release everything it has collected.

Mould needs moisture to form. By continuously pulling excess humidity out of the air, the Air Refiner removes the conditions mould needs to take hold. It is particularly effective in caravans, boats, and enclosed storage where moisture builds up fast.

Most people notice a difference within 24 to 48 hours in fresh placements. In heavily damp or musty spaces like a caravan that has been packed down for a while, a bathroom with long-term moisture buildup, or a boat cabin, it can take 1 to 2 weeks to see the full effect as the charcoal works through the existing moisture in the air and surfaces.

If you have a particularly damp space, give it some time. The Air Refiner is working even when you cannot immediately smell the difference. Customers who have stuck with it consistently tell us the difference after two to four weeks in a problem space is significant.

The OG Air Refiner covers between 15 and 20m² for general filtration, making it ideal for open living spaces, bedrooms, and caravan main areas. Each individual Slim Air Refiner covers up to 8m², designed for tighter and more enclosed spaces where airflow is limited. Two Slims together roughly equal the coverage of one OG.

As a practical guide, a standard caravan typically suits 1 OG plus a Slim Duo. A larger van or motorhome benefits from 1 to 2 OGs and Slims for storage. A boat cabin can use an OG or a Slim Duo depending on size. A bedroom at home: one OG. A caravan fridge: a Slim. In high-humidity environments like North Queensland or coastal conditions, lean toward more coverage rather than less.

Completely safe. There are no chemicals, no fragrances, no sprays and nothing harmful inside. The activated charcoal is the same material used in water filters and is non-toxic. The outer fabric is sealed so nothing escapes from the bag during normal use.

If a pet or child chewed through the fabric and ingested the charcoal granules, it is not dangerous, as activated charcoal is used medically in some situations. That said, we would not encourage it. Keep them in the spots they are designed for and let them do their thing.

Up to 2 years from the date you put it into use, not from the date of purchase. Regular monthly sun baking keeps the charcoal performing at full capacity throughout that period.

After 2 years, the charcoal granules have reached the end of their adsorption capacity and the bag should be retired. The charcoal can go into your garden as a soil conditioner, as activated charcoal is beneficial for plant growth and drainage. The outer fabric can be disposed of with general waste or repurposed.

Yes, and this is one of the most common reasons customers use them. Mould needs moisture to form. By continuously drawing excess humidity out of the air in enclosed spaces, the Air Refiner removes the conditions mould needs to take hold.

It is particularly effective for caravans, boats, and vehicles that are packed away or stored for periods of time. Customers who put Air Refiners in before packing down their van or boat consistently report opening up to a fresh, dry interior rather than the mould and damp they were battling before.

Important: Air Refiners manage moisture in the air. They are not a fix for water ingress. If you have a leak or crack letting water in, that needs to be addressed first.

Hanging is optional. The Air Refiner works just as well placed flat on a shelf, bench, drawer, or any surface where air can circulate around the bag. The rope and eyelet are there for convenience in spaces where hanging makes sense, like a wardrobe rod or a hook in a bathroom.

The only thing to avoid is sealing it completely in an airtight container with no airflow, as the charcoal needs air movement to do its job.

SUN BAKING

Simple. Once a month, take your Air Refiner out and place it in direct sunlight for approximately one hour. Outside on a deck, a car bonnet, a fence rail, anywhere it gets full direct sun.

The UV energy from direct sunlight purges what the charcoal has been holding, including the moisture and odour particles it has absorbed over the past month. After an hour, the charcoal is refreshed and ready to go back to work at full capacity.

Once a month is the standard recommendation. Think of it like checking tyre pressure, a quick monthly habit that keeps everything running at its best.

In high-humidity environments like tropical and coastal Queensland, or during wet season, you might find it benefits from sun baking every 2 to 3 weeks. In drier conditions or lower-humidity spaces, monthly is plenty.

If you forget for a month or two, it is not ruined. Two sessions of one hour each on the same day will get it back to full performance.

Glass filters out the UV wavelengths that do the work. Sitting your Air Refiner on a windowsill in sunlight might warm it up but it will not purge what the charcoal has been holding. It needs to be in direct, unfiltered outdoor sunlight to be effective.

Even on an overcast day, direct outdoor light contains enough UV to do the job, it just takes a little longer. On a cloudy day, extend the sun baking session to 2 hours instead of one.

For extended grey periods, the Air Refiner will continue absorbing on a fuller load. Get it out whenever the sun appears and a good hour outside will bring it back to capacity.

The simplest sign is if the space starts to smell or feel damper than usual. That is a signal the charcoal is reaching its monthly capacity. If you have been consistent with monthly sun baking you will rarely notice this.

You can also feel the bag. A charcoal bag that has been absorbing heavily for a month will feel slightly firmer and denser than one that has just been sun baked.

Not at all. Give it two sessions of one hour each in direct sunlight, either on the same day or across two consecutive days. That extra session will clear the backlog and get it back to full performance.

WHERE TO USE IT

For a standard caravan, start with one OG in the main living and sleeping area, either hung from an overhead rail or placed on a shelf. Then put a Slim Duo across the spaces that hold the most moisture: the bathroom, the fridge, and the main storage cupboards.

Bathroom: on the vanity, shelf, or hung from a hook. Fridge: in the fruit and veg drawer or above. Bedroom: on the bedside ledge or hung near the wardrobe. Main storage: one Slim per large cupboard or drawer set.

If you are packing the van down for storage, leave them in place. They keep working while it is closed up, which is exactly when moisture and mould are most likely to take hold.

Yes, and this is one of the most popular uses. A Slim in the fridge fruit and vegetable drawer or on a shelf absorbs the moisture that makes produce go limp and drawers go musty. Customers report vegetables staying fresher significantly longer and the fridge smelling noticeably cleaner.

Take it out once a month for its sun bake. One hour in direct sunlight and it goes straight back in.

Inside the bathroom, as close to the source as possible. On the vanity top, a shelf, or hung on a hook near the toilet. The cistern top works well in compact wet baths. The closer to the odour source, the more effective it is at pulling those particles out of the air before they circulate through the rest of the van.

Boats are one of our most challenging and rewarding environments. The combination of saltwater exposure, limited ventilation, and closed-up storage makes boat cabins and lockers prime candidates for moisture and odour buildup.

For boat use, the Slim works for lockers, storage compartments, and tight below-deck spaces. A Slim Duo gives you two independent units to deploy across the cabin and the main storage area. The OG works well in the main cabin if you have the space.

Absolutely. Canopies and rooftop tents hold a lot of moisture from condensation, wet gear, and overnight dew. A Slim in the canopy drawer system or at the base of a rooftop tent works through the night while you sleep and keeps the inside of your setup significantly drier and fresher.

For a full 4WD setup, a common configuration is one Slim in the canopy or drawer system, one Slim in the fridge, and an OG in the main sleeping space.

The Air Refiner keeps working in a sealed space. Moisture is still present in the air of any enclosed environment and the charcoal will continue absorbing it even with limited airflow.

This makes it particularly valuable for seasonal storage. Pack your van, boat, or caravan down with Air Refiners in place and they will quietly manage the moisture load throughout the storage period.

For a standard 18 to 22 foot family caravan, a solid starting point is 1 OG for the main living and sleeping area, plus 1 Slim Duo (2 units), one in the fridge and one in the bathroom.

That covers the key moisture zones in most vans. For larger setups or high-humidity areas like North Queensland and the coast, add an extra Slim or two for the main storage cupboards and wardrobe space.

Yes, and it works extremely well for musty wardrobes, ensuite bathrooms, and bedrooms with moisture problems. Place the OG on a shelf in a walk-in robe, in a bathroom, or on a bedside table. A Slim in a built-in wardrobe or linen cupboard handles stored clothing freshness.

For pet owners, placing an Air Refiner near your pet's sleeping or feeding area, like a laundry, mudroom, or lounge corner, is a popular use and genuinely effective at pulling pet odour out of the air without any chemical fragrance.

OG VS SLIM

Both products use the same activated charcoal and work the same way. The difference is size, shape, and the spaces they are designed for.

The OG is our original, larger Air Refiner. It has more charcoal inside, making it better suited for open spaces. It covers between 15 and 20m² for general filtration.

The Slim is narrower and designed to fit where the OG cannot, like fridge drawers, tight cupboards, canopy storage, rooftop tents, and small enclosed spaces. The Slim comes as a Duo because the concept is built around splitting them across two locations. Each Slim covers up to 8m² independently.

Yes, that is exactly what the Slim Duo is designed for. The two units are independent and can be used in completely separate spaces. One in the fridge, one in the bathroom. One in the canopy, one in the cab. One in the wardrobe, one in the ensuite.

Each Slim works at full capacity on its own.

The Slim. Its narrower profile fits inside most caravan fridge drawers and shelves without taking up the space you need for food. Sit it on a shelf, in the fruit and veg drawer, or prop it against the back wall.

The OG. A single OG handles up to 20m² which covers most bedrooms and caravan sleeping areas comfortably. For a larger bedroom or a particularly damp environment, a second OG or an added Slim in the wardrobe gives you complete coverage.

Yes, each individual Slim covers up to 8m² so it is capable in larger spaces. The OG just holds more charcoal which means it takes slightly longer between sun baking sessions. If all you have is a Slim and you need it in a bigger space, it will still do the job. Just keep up with the monthly sun baking.

PRODUCT CARE

Not ruined at all. Getting wet does not damage the charcoal. It just means the bag has absorbed a lot of moisture at once and needs to be dried out and sun baked before going back to work.

Take it out of the wet environment, give it a gentle shake to redistribute the charcoal inside, and let it air dry completely. Then give it a full hour in direct sunlight. After that it is back to full performance.

It happens. Take it out, give it a gentle shake, and let it air dry completely for at least 24 hours before attempting to sun bake it. Do not put it in a dryer, as the heat can damage the outer fabric.

Once it is fully dry, give it two sessions of one hour each in direct sunlight over consecutive days to fully purge and restore the charcoal. Check the seams. If the bag has split or the charcoal is escaping, it has reached the end of its life and should be replaced.

No, and we would strongly advise against it. Essential oils coat the charcoal granules and fill the microscopic pores that do the absorbing work. Adding oils reduces the effectiveness of the Air Refiner and over time will clog the charcoal permanently.

The Air Refiner is designed to neutralise odours, not mask them. If you are noticing persistent smells, the answer is usually more coverage or a sun bake rather than adding fragrance on top.

No. The Air Refiner is completely dry and non-marking. The outer fabric is sealed and nothing escapes during normal use. It is safe on timber, fabric, carpet, vinyl, bench surfaces, anywhere you need to place it.

The charcoal can be cut out of the bag and added to your garden, as activated charcoal is beneficial for soil drainage and plant growth. The outer recycled fabric can be disposed of in general waste or repurposed as a small pouch.

Nothing about the product is hazardous. Both the charcoal and the fabric are natural and safe to dispose of normally.
